Geopolitical context

Reliance's Jamnagar complex has become a key node in the post-2022 energy trade reconfiguration. India has dramatically increased purchases of discounted Russian crude, processing it at Jamnagar and other refineries, then re-exporting refined products (diesel, jet fuel) to Europe and the US. This "crude laundering" (critics' term) effectively allows Russian oil to reach Western markets in refined form — a gray zone in the sanctions architecture. Reliance founder Mukesh Ambani's relationship with both Western and Gulf governments makes Jamnagar a fulcrum of India's energy diplomacy.
