Geopolitical context

Located in waters that overlap with China's "nine-dash line" claim. Chinese coast guard and fishing militia vessels regularly enter what Indonesia considers its exclusive economic zone around Natuna. Jakarta renamed the area the "North Natuna Sea" in 2017 to assert sovereignty. The field's extreme CO₂ content (requiring expensive carbon sequestration) combined with sovereignty risks have deterred investment — making it a case where geological and geopolitical challenges compound to strand significant reserves.
