Geopolitical context

Urengoy's development in the 1970s was the foundation of the Soviet-European gas trade that persisted for 50 years. The Reagan administration tried to block European participation in Urengoy pipeline construction (1982 sanctions on Dresser Industries), but failed — Europe chose energy supply over alliance solidarity. The field's declining output parallels the broader maturation of West Siberian production that has driven Russia's need for new frontier developments.
