Geopolitical context

Novatek's LNG projects represent Russia's only globally competitive LNG capability. Yamal LNG was built with significant Chinese financing, French technology (TotalEnergies), and Japanese engineering. Arctic LNG-2, however, has been severely impacted by US/EU sanctions — Western contractors withdrew, and specialized ice-class LNG carriers cannot be sourced. China's CNOOC and CNPC hold stakes. The projects use the Northern Sea Route (Arctic shipping lane) which Russia is developing as a strategic alternative to the Suez Canal, linking Asian and European markets across its northern coast.
