Geopolitical context

The 1994 "Contract of the Century" was the foundational deal of post-Soviet Caspian energy development. It brought Western majors (BP, Amoco, Unocal, others) into Azerbaijan, established BP as the dominant operator, and set the stage for the BTC pipeline. The deal was as much about geopolitics as oil — anchoring Azerbaijan's Western orientation and reducing Russia's monopoly over Caspian export routes. BP's continued operatorship gives the UK significant influence in Azerbaijani affairs.
