Azerbaijan (offshore Caspian). ~1.2 tcm reserves. BP-operated. Anchor supply for Southern Gas Corridor (SCP → TANAP → TAP). Phase 2 added ~16 bcm/yr capacity.

Geopolitical context

The anchor field for Europe's most important gas diversification project. BP's operatorship (with SOCAR, TPAO, Petronas, Lukoil, and NICO as partners) makes this a multinational strategic asset. Shah Deniz Phase 2's Final Investment Decision in 2013 was a milestone — it committed the gas to Europe rather than to Russia, which had lobbied hard to buy the volumes. The field gives Azerbaijan leverage in EU diplomacy that far exceeds its size, and ensures Baku's Western alignment has a durable commercial foundation.
