Iran (Khuzestan). ~750,000 bpd. One of Iran's largest onshore fields. Part of the greater Marun-Ahvaz-Aghajari complex. Discovered 1958.

Geopolitical context

Khuzestan province — where Ahvaz and most of Iran's onshore oil sits — has an ethnic Arab minority population. Saddam Hussein's 1980 invasion of Iran targeted Khuzestan specifically to seize these oil fields, triggering the 8-year Iran-Iraq War (~1 million casualties). The province has seen periodic unrest over water shortages and environmental degradation from oil operations. Iran's inability to attract foreign investment due to US sanctions has left these mature fields underperforming their potential — Iran produces ~3.2M bpd vs. a theoretical 5M+ capacity.
