Overview

Cyprus (offshore). ~140 bcm reserves. Discovered 2011. Development stalled by Turkey-Cyprus tensions. Potential tie-in to Egypt LNG infrastructure.

Geopolitical context

Aphrodite's development is hostage to the unresolved Cyprus division. Turkey, which does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus, disputes its right to exploit offshore resources without including the Turkish Cypriot community. Ankara has sent drilling ships and naval escorts into disputed Cypriot waters. The EU has issued sanctions warnings but taken limited action. If developed, the most likely export route would be a subsea pipeline to Egypt's LNG plants — avoiding a direct pipeline to Europe that would cross Turkish-claimed waters.
