Azerbaijan (Shah Deniz) through Georgia, Turkey, Greece to Italy. ~3,500 km total. Capacity expanding to ~20+ bcm/yr. Fully operational 2020. Strategic alternative to Russian gas for Europe. Shah Deniz Phase 2 is the anchor supply.

Geopolitical context

A flagship EU diversification project designed to reduce dependence on Russian gas. Deliberately routes through Georgia (not Russia or Iran), reinforcing Tbilisi's Western alignment and its role as a Caucasus energy corridor. Turkey benefits as the primary transit state — TANAP's 16 bcm/yr capacity includes 6 bcm for Turkish domestic use. Since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Europe has pushed to double capacity. Azerbaijan's leverage has grown considerably; Baku signed expanded gas supply deals with the EU in 2022. However, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and Azerbaijan's human rights record create diplomatic tension with EU values commitments.
