Geopolitical context

The only cross-border pipeline in the GCC — remarkable given the Gulf states' vast hydrocarbon wealth. Continued operating during the 2017-2021 Qatar diplomatic crisis (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt severed ties with Doha), demonstrating that energy infrastructure can transcend political ruptures when the dependency is mutual. UAE's growing gas demand and inability to self-supply makes this pipeline strategically vital for Abu Dhabi despite periodic tensions with Doha. The pipeline also symbolizes the limits of Gulf economic integration — despite decades of GCC cooperation, this remains the only gas pipeline connecting member states.
