Geopolitical context

Qatar lifted its self-imposed moratorium on North Field development in 2017 after concluding that competitors (US shale gas, Australia, Mozambique) threatened its market dominance. The NFE/NFS expansion will increase Qatar's LNG capacity by ~60%, with TotalEnergies, Shell, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, and Eni as minority partners — giving five Western majors a direct stake in Qatari stability. Qatar signed 27-year supply deals with China, ensuring long-term demand lock-in. This expansion will make Qatar the world's undisputed LNG superpower well into the 2050s.
