Qatar / Iran. World's largest natural gas field. Shared structure: Qatar's North Field (~24.7 tcm reserves) and Iran's South Pars (~14 tcm). Feeds Qatar's LNG empire and Iran's domestic supply. ~200+ bcm/yr combined output.
The single most strategically important gas structure on Earth. Qatar's side generates ~$40B+/yr in LNG revenues, funding a sovereign wealth fund (~$450B) that gives Doha outsized global influence. Qatar supplies ~30% of global LNG and can swing spot markets. Iran's inability to fully develop South Pars (due to sanctions, technology gaps, and capital constraints) represents one of the largest "stranded" resource bases globally — Tehran produces far less from its side despite comparable reserves. The shared geological structure creates an implicit race: every molecule Qatar extracts potentially reduces Iran's recoverable reserves, adding an unseen competitive tension beneath the diplomatic surface.
An explosion at the Barzan gas facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City killed at least 13 workers two days after restart operations began. Qatar's energy minister blamed a technical malfunction, ruled out sabotage and said exports would not be affected.
Israel struck gas treatment facilities at Asaluyeh serving the South Pars field, which supplies about 70% of Iran's domestic gas, triggering Iranian retaliation against Gulf energy infrastructure. Trump said the US 'knew nothing' in advance and threatened South Pars if attacks on Qatar continued.
QatarEnergy halted production after military attacks on Ras Laffan and Mesaieed industrial cities. Qatar supplies about 20% of world LNG. Dutch TTF front-month rose €14.52 to €46.52/MWh on 2 March from about €32 the previous Friday.
