Saudi Arabia's primary insurance policy against a Hormuz closure. If Iran ever blocked the strait (threatened during 1980s tanker wars, 2012 nuclear tensions, and 2019 incidents), this pipeline could reroute ~5 million bpd to Red Sea tankers. The Sept 2019 drone/missile attack on Abqaiq (attributed to Iran/Houthis) temporarily knocked out ~5.7 million bpd of Saudi processing capacity — the single largest supply disruption in history. This demonstrated that even bypass infrastructure remains vulnerable to precision-strike capabilities now available to non-state actors and regional militaries.
Saudi forces said they intercepted six ballistic missiles aimed at Yanbu and Taif on 24 September; on 25 September the Houthis claimed missile and drone strikes on Aramco facilities in Yanbu and a 'sensitive target' in Riyadh. No damage was confirmed. Yanbu is Saudi Arabia's main Red Sea export outlet and the terminus of the East-West pipeline.
