Geopolitical context

Russia's most important post-Soviet pipeline project. Gives Moscow its first direct Pacific export capacity, enabling sales to China, Japan, South Korea, and India without transiting any other country. After 2022 Western sanctions, ESPO blend became Russia's primary mechanism for redirecting oil from European to Asian buyers — often at discounts of $20-30/bbl below Brent. ESPO crude trades above the G7 price cap, testing enforcement mechanisms. Japan has maintained stakes in Sakhalin projects that feed ESPO despite Western pressure, reflecting Tokyo's energy security pragmatism. The pipeline fundamentally altered the Asian crude pricing landscape.
