Geopolitical context

Canada supplies ~60% of US crude imports, nearly all of it from the oil sands. That dependence runs both ways — Alberta historically had no alternative buyer — which is why the TMX expansion to the Pacific coast became a matter of national sovereignty for Ottawa, especially after the 2025 tariff disputes with Washington.
