Geopolitical context
Guyana went from zero to one of the world's highest per-capita oil producers in five years. Venezuela claims the Essequibo region (two-thirds of Guyana's territory) and held a referendum on annexing it in 2023. The Stabroek shares that Chevron won in arbitration against ExxonMobil in 2025 give two US majors and a Chinese state firm a stake in keeping the region stable.
