Geopolitical context
Faced significant local opposition in Puglia (southern Italy) during construction — environmental and land-use concerns delayed the project and became a political issue. Despite this, TAP is now seen as strategically vital for Italian and broader European supply diversification. Italy became the first major EU economy to receive Caspian gas, reducing its historically heavy dependence on Algerian and Russian pipeline gas. Expansion discussions accelerated after 2022.
